Job Description – Weekday Sexton Position
St Peter & St Paul’s Anglican Church, Ottawa
The weekday sexton is a part-time (20 to 25 hours weekly) role at the church that is crucial for the good functioning of the parish. The weekday sexton works with a variety of people both within and outside the parish in order to keep a clean, safe, friendly, and well-maintained environment for parish staff, clergy, parishioners, renters, and the larger community.
The sexton ensures that all publicly accessible areas of the church and property are clean, well-stocked, and ready for use. In addition to cleaning the church, the sexton sets up tables and chairs for meetings and events, oversees inventory of cleaning and building supplies, provides basic lawn maintenance, as well as snow and ice removal at the entrances of the church.
The weekday sexton oversees the safety and security of the church building and property when on site. The sexton works with community professionals including those providing specialized services such as HVAC maintenance, pest control, fire control, plumbing repairs, etc. The sexton is to report potential issues to his/her supervisor and will also work at times with members of the Parish Maintenance Committee.
The weekday sexton is expected to be a team player who will support other staff and clergy and who can also work independently. As a representative of the church, the sexton is expected to reflect God’s love and compassion for all people when interacting with others, including parishioners, visitors, and people off the street.
